2 + 2 at Old Dominion University

It has been proved time after time that educational modes should be diverse, innovative and creative and can keep up with changing times. The majority of people have witnessed and many of us have experienced the innovation of distance education. Among the applause and acclaims over this alternative educational mode, there are critics centering on its inability to cover what is provided by its traditional counterpart.

It’s sure that traditional education can not be replaced by any new mode, not even distance learning. But how about combining the two, especially the most positive attributes of them?

That is exactly what Old Dominion University (ODU) does with its 2 + 2 Partnership.

What is 2 + 2 at Old Dominion University?

If put in short, 2 + 2 is 2 years with Old Dominion University and 2 years at a Virginia community college. That is it.

It is a program supported by ODU and the Virginia Community College System (VCCS). The partnership of the two makes two things possible: a) it will be easier for students to complete their bachelor’s degree and b) community students in Virginia will have guaranteed acceptance into ODU.

What are the requirements then?

All you need to present is a) an associate’s degree from a Virginia community college with a minimum of 2.5 GPA and b) a grade of “C” or higher in each course so you will be eligible for transfer.

And speaking of transfer, as mentioned above, 2 + 2 comes with a Guaranteed Admission Agreement. This agreement is to offer you a perfect way to transfer from a Virginia community college to ODU. If you qualify for the transfer, you will be accepted to ODU where access to its advisors is always open as long as you are enrolled in your community college.

Upon the completion of the Guaranteed Admission agreement process, you’ll have a dual identity as a student of both the community college and of ODU.

Besides this transfer option, you can go with regular transfer admission when you have successfully completed at least 24 college credits.

What are the rates and fees?

The standard rates and fees for studying at ODU work vary between undergraduate and graduate students.

– For undergraduate students

The cost per credit hour is 273 dollars. The part-time average cost per semester is 1,638 dollars for 2 courses and 6 credit hours. Full-time average cost per semester is 3,276 dollars for courses and 12 credit hours.

– For graduate students

It is 393 dollars per credit hour, 2,358 dollars for part-time average (2 courses, 6 credit hours) and 3,573 dollars for full-time average (3 courses and 9 credit hours).

What you should know is that the above is standards only. Changes may apply. Also, the cost of books or materials or General Service Fee applied each semester is not included.

For students enrolling in the 2 + 2, there is special savings. Nearly 30 percent in tuition and fees can be saved “if you complete your associate’s degree at a Virginia community college and transfer to ODU for the last two years of a bachelor’s degree program”.

What are the programs offered?

Currently, there are over 20 undergraduate programs offered in 2 + 2.

The list is long, so I’ll just take few examples. There is Accounting (BSBA), Accounting (minor), Aerospace Engineering (MS), Autism Spectrum Disorders (Cert), Business Administration (minor), Civil Engineering Technology (minor), Computer Science (BSCS), Criminal Justice (BS/BA), Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), Finance (BSBA) and more.
